If you’ve been referred to an ENT, there are a few things you should do before you show up for your first appointment. There’s no need to fret – just follow Dr Ted Smith’s simple tips and you’ll be more than ready to step into the clinic.
Bring the right documents
When you visit your GP seeking treatment for an illness or painful condition, they may refer you on to a specialist doctor. A referral is an official document that will likely be printed out and handed to you at the end of your appointment and is meant to be brought with you when you visit the specialist. Similarly, you will need to bring your Medicare or health fund cards or documents in order to claim any eligible benefits.
Observe your symptoms
Assist your specialist by keeping track of your symptoms in the days or weeks leading up to the appointment. These notes could include the kind of pain or discomfort you’re experiencing, where you feel it, if any particular actions relieve or exacerbate it, etc. This information can help your ENT specialist come to a conclusion in diagnosing your complaint.
Make a list of questions you want to ask
It’s understandable that you’ll have questions for your ENT specialist, and Dr Ted Smith is happy to chat about any queries or concerns you may have. Feel free to bring a list of questions into your appointment and take notes throughout in case there’s something you want to follow up on later. Keeping communication open and honest is the best way to create effective treatment plans.
Bring a friend/support person
We understand that appointments can be scary for a lot of people, and not just for young children. For your own comfort, you’re welcome to bring a friend or family member to your appointment to offer you some moral support. It’s important for you to feel comfortable and confident whilst seeking medical treatment, so we understand if you need someone to hold your hand throughout!
Arrive on time!
Specialists can book up weeks and months in advance, so please arrive at your appointment at least 15 minutes early. There may be forms you are required to fill out, so allow yourself plenty of time to settle in. We don’t want you to feel flustered or panicked upon arrival, and your timeliness will help us see the rest of our patients on time.
